Famous from the films Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, the clownfish has become a beloved pet in aquariums. The characters Nemo and Marlin are ocellaris clownfish, also referred to as false clownfish or clown anemonefish. They earn their name because they live among sea anemones. There are 28 known species of anemonefish, showcasing a variety of colors, including pink, red, yellow, black, brown, and striped combinations.

Size & Appearance

False clownfish are primarily orange with three white bands across their head and body, bordered in black. Adults typically measure around 3 inches (88 mm), though they can reach up to 4 inches (110 mm). Their tail is rounded, and their dorsal fin contains 11 spines.

Habitat

These fish inhabit coral reefs along the coasts of Australia and Southeast Asia, extending as far north as southern Japan. They usually reside near specific anemone species, which attach to the seabed and use stinging tentacles to capture prey. These tentacles contain nematocysts, which release toxins when touched. Clownfish, however, are protected by a mucus layer that builds up on their skin, making them immune. This forms a mutualistic relationship: the anemone provides protection and leftover food, while the clownfish feeds the anemone and removes parasites.

Behavior

Clownfish, like all anemonefish, are sequential hermaphrodites, starting life as males. They can later transform into females, a change that is irreversible. This usually happens during mating, where the dominant male becomes female, and the subordinate male takes over as the dominant male.

Groups are structured with a dominant female leading, followed by the dominant male and smaller males. If the female dies, the dominant male changes sex, and the next largest male rises in rank.

Clownfish communicate through clicking and popping sounds, helping maintain group hierarchy. Researchers suggest that these sounds may reduce conflicts within the group.

Diet

Clownfish are omnivores, feeding on both plant and animal matter. Their diet includes algae, zooplankton, worms, and tiny crustaceans. Young fish usually remain near their host anemone, venturing only short distances to forage as they grow.

Reproduction & Offspring

False clownfish are monogamous. The male prepares a nest on bare rock near the anemone. He courts the female with fin displays, chasing, and gentle biting. The female deposits 100–1,000 eggs, 3–4 mm long, which the male fertilizes by releasing sperm over them.

The male then tends the eggs, fanning them and consuming any damaged or infertile ones. Hatching occurs within 6–8 days, with larvae drifting for about 10 days before settling on the reef to find a host anemone. Juveniles develop their characteristic colors as they mature.

Conservation Status

Ocellaris clownfish are not endangered, but 15–30% of reefs have been lost in recent decades. This is partially due to overharvesting for the aquarium trade. The popularity of Finding Nemo caused a surge in clownfish demand, sometimes referred to as the “Nemo Effect”. Poor understanding of care has led to issues, including many children releasing pet fish into toilets.

Other Facts

False clownfish are called "false" because they closely resemble the orange clownfish (Amphiprion percula). Key differences include:

Clown anemonefish have narrow black bands, whereas orange clownfish have thick bands.

Their coloration is slightly less vibrant.

Viewed head-on, clown anemonefish heads look plain, while orange clownfish have a rounded, bulging face.

Their eyes are grayish-orange and appear larger than in orange clownfish, whose bright iris gives a smaller-eye illusion.
