Walnuts have a long history that can be traced back to ancient Persia, where they were once considered a food reserved for royalty. Later on, they spread to California and eventually became one of the state’s top agricultural products, even ranking among the top 10 commodities in 2021.

Despite their long-standing reputation as a valuable food, the question remains: what makes walnuts so special? The answer largely comes down to their impressive nutritional profile and the range of health benefits they offer.

Although walnuts are energy-dense, they are packed with essential nutrients that support multiple aspects of health.

1. Supports Heart Health

Walnuts are especially rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid known for helping reduce inflammation in the body. In fact, walnuts are the only tree nut that contains a significant amount of omega-3s.

Because of their anti-inflammatory properties, regular walnut consumption may help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and support overall heart function.

2. Supports Brain Function

Research suggests that walnuts contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory polyphenols that may benefit brain health. These compounds are associated with improved cognitive performance and may help slow age-related mental decline.

Cognitive function includes memory, thinking ability, and overall mental processing, all of which may be positively influenced by nutrients found in walnuts.

3. Promotes Gut Health

The microorganisms living in the digestive tract play a crucial role in overall health. Studies indicate that walnuts may positively influence the balance of gut bacteria.

In clinical observations, individuals who consumed walnuts daily showed improvements in the diversity and health of their gut microbiome, suggesting a beneficial effect on digestive wellness.

4. May Contribute to Cancer Protection

Gut bacteria can metabolize compounds found in walnuts and produce substances called urolithins. These compounds are being studied for their potential role in reducing the risk of certain cancers.

Although research is still ongoing, early findings suggest that walnuts may play a supportive role in long-term disease prevention.

How Much Walnut Should You Eat?

Dietary guidelines recommend about 5 ounces of nuts, seeds, and soy foods per week for someone following a 2,000-calorie diet. A standard serving of walnuts is about 1 ounce, which contains roughly 2 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein, 18 grams of fat, and around 190 calories.

Even though walnuts are calorie-rich, they are also nutrient-dense and help promote satiety due to their healthy fat content.

Some research also suggests that not all the calories in walnuts are fully absorbed by the body. One study estimated that an ounce containing 190 calories may actually provide closer to 145 usable calories.

Walnuts also contribute important minerals such as iron and magnesium, covering about 10–14% of daily needs.

Best Ways to Eat Walnuts

For the greatest nutritional benefit, raw and unsalted walnuts are generally recommended. They can be eaten on their own as a snack or added to foods like oatmeal, yogurt, or salads.

Even though walnuts are healthy, moderation is still important due to their calorie density.

Research and Future Studies

Walnuts contain a wide range of beneficial compounds, but scientists are still exploring their full effects on human health. Ongoing research aims to better understand how walnuts influence cholesterol levels, gut health, and cardiovascular risk.

One research initiative at UC Davis is currently studying how walnut consumption may impact gut bacteria and cholesterol. Participants include men and postmenopausal women aged 45–70, with the study lasting about 10 weeks and involving several short visits to the university.

This type of research helps deepen our understanding of how walnuts may contribute to a balanced and heart-healthy diet.

Manned Submersibles: Human Exploration of the Deep Ocean

Manned submersibles enable humans to reach the most inaccessible regions of the ocean. These specialized underwater vehicles allow a direct human presence in extreme marine environments, offering experiences and capabilities that other platforms, including larger submarines, cannot provide. Unlike full-sized submarines, submersibles generally have limited range and depend on a support ship for extended operations.
