For generations, the silver pomfret has been one of the most valued fish along India’s western coast. However, this once-abundant species is becoming increasingly difficult to find due to overfishing, changing ocean conditions, coastal development, and environmental pressures.
Among the Koli fishing communities of Mumbai, the silver pomfret is not only a source of income but also an important part of cultural identity. Many traditional dishes and coastal traditions are closely connected with this fish. However, declining populations have begun to threaten both the fishing economy and local heritage.
One of the main reasons for the decline is excessive fishing. Young and immature pomfrets are often caught before they have the chance to reproduce, reducing the number of adult fish in the ocean. Rising sea temperatures and changing currents also create additional challenges for juvenile survival.
Another problem is the loss of traditional ecological knowledge among fishing communities. Younger generations are increasingly leaving fishing careers for urban jobs, causing valuable knowledge about seasonal patterns, marine conditions, and sustainable fishing methods to disappear.
The use of smaller fishing nets has also contributed to the problem. Although regulations require larger mesh sizes to protect young fish, some fishermen use smaller nets to increase catches, resulting in more juvenile pomfrets being removed from the sea.
Because fully grown silver pomfret has become expensive, many lower-income consumers purchase smaller fish instead. These younger fish are cheaper but are caught before reaching maturity, further affecting population recovery.
Scientists and fishing advocates suggest several solutions, including respecting seasonal fishing limits, choosing locally available fish, reducing destructive fishing methods, and strengthening marine conservation policies. Protecting the silver pomfret requires not only saving a species but also preserving the livelihoods and traditions of coastal communities.
The future of the silver pomfret depends on balancing human needs with ocean protection. Without sustainable management, this iconic coastal fish may continue to disappear from both the sea and the cultural memories built around it.

Sea Kayaking: A Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide

Sea Kayaking: A Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide

Thousands of years ago, Indigenous peoples of the Arctic navigated the oceans using kayaks constructed from animal hides stretched over wooden or whalebone frames. Modern sea kayaks, thankfully, are far more robust and easier to maneuver. Yet, the fundamental experience remains the same: gliding over water in a lightweight, streamlined vessel while contending with wind, waves, and currents. Sea kayaking offers a unique sense of serenity, allowing paddlers to leave the hustle of daily life behind and view familiar coastlines from a fresh perspective. Wildlife encounters—ranging from orca pods along Norway’s shores to otters and sea eagles in Scotland—add to the adventure and allure of the sport. For those eager to try, understanding the essentials of equipment, technique, and safety is key.
