Antelopes are some of nature’s most graceful animals, often resembling deer in appearance. These hoofed mammals walk on two main toes on each foot, and their hooves are hard and protective—perfect for moving across grasslands and rocky ground.

What Is an Antelope?

The term "antelope" doesn’t refer to one specific species, but rather a wide variety of animals in the Bovidae family. While cattle, sheep, goats, and buffalo are excluded, many other hoofed animals with slim builds and permanent horns fall under this group.

Where Do Antelopes Live?

Most antelope species are found across Africa, especially below the Sahara desert. A few types also live in parts of Asia. Interestingly, there are no wild antelopes in North America. The pronghorn—often mistaken for an antelope—is a different species altogether and sheds its branched horns every year, unlike true antelopes.

Diversity in the Antelope Family

There are around 91 known antelope species, with most of them living on the African continent. These animals are often seen in groups, called herds, which helps protect them from predators.

Different Homes for Different Antelopes

Antelopes are incredibly adaptable. Some prefer quiet forests or thick bushland and tend to stay in one area. Others thrive in open spaces like grasslands and savannas, where they can roam more freely.

Incredible Long-Distance Travelers

Many antelopes, such as gazelles and wildebeests, go on long journeys to find food. These journeys are known as migrations. They follow the rains, which help fresh grass grow—their main source of food. These massive group movements are one of nature’s most spectacular events.

What Makes an Antelope an Antelope?

Antelopes have several special traits:
  • They walk on two main toes per foot, each protected by a hoof.
  • Their eyes have horizontal pupils, which help them spot danger from far away.
  • Like cows and sheep, antelopes chew their food, swallow it, and then bring it back up to chew again—a process called "rumination."
  • Most males grow strong, bony horns, and in some species, females do too.
  • Males and females often look different, with males usually being larger and having longer horns.

Horns Are Not Antlers

It’s easy to mix them up, but here’s the difference:
  • Antelope horns never fall off. They keep growing through the animal’s life.
  • Horns are made of a bony base covered by keratin—the same material found in your nails.
  • Antlers, like those on deer, are made of bone only and are shed and regrown every year.

Running and Jumping Champions

Some antelopes, like the springbok and gazelle, are famous for their speed and agility. They can leap and dash at amazing speeds to escape predators. Even the heavier species, such as the eland or kudu, can jump over 8 feet high! However, their bigger bodies make them slower runners than their smaller cousins.
Antelopes are not only quick and agile but also incredibly varied and adaptable. With their different sizes, habitats, and lifestyles, these hoofed animals are a remarkable part of the animal kingd
