What is The Bean?

Located in the heart of downtown, The Bean — officially known as Cloud Gate — is a celebrated piece of public art and among the world’s largest outdoor permanent installations. Since its unveiling in 2004, it has quickly become one of Chicago’s most recognizable attractions.

Where can you find Cloud Gate?

It is situated in Millennium Park, right in Chicago’s downtown Loop district. Perched above the McCormick Tribune Plaza, the site offers seasonal activities: outdoor dining in summer and a free skating rink during the winter. Strolling along Michigan Avenue between Randolph and Monroe, it’s nearly impossible to miss this gleaming landmark.

What does Cloud Gate represent?

The sculpture’s mirror-like surface was inspired by liquid mercury. Its gleaming exterior captures moving crowds, the sparkle of Michigan Avenue, and the surrounding skyline, perfectly reflecting the spirit of Millennium Park.
Visitors are encouraged to touch the seamless surface and enjoy distorted reflections, creating an interactive experience. The curved underside, which people can walk through, resembles a gateway — inspiring artist Anish Kapoor to officially name it Cloud Gate.

Who created Cloud Gate?

Cloud Gate was designed by renowned artist Anish Kapoor, an Indian-born British sculptor internationally recognized for his large outdoor works, many featuring reflective materials. Cloud Gate was his first permanent outdoor public artwork in the U.S., and remains his most celebrated creation.

What materials make up Cloud Gate?

The sculpture’s polished shell is constructed entirely from stainless steel. Using advanced computer modeling, 168 enormous steel plates were cut, aligned, and welded into a seamless finish.
Inside, two large metal rings connect through a truss system similar to a bridge structure. This distributes the immense weight to two base points, forming the sculpture’s signature “bean-like” contour and allowing people to walk through the hollow underside. Flexible connectors secure the steel panels to the inner frame, enabling the surface to expand and contract with Chicago’s changing weather.

How large is Cloud Gate?

Cloud Gate measures 33 feet tall, 42 feet wide, and 66 feet long, weighing approximately 110 tons — about the same as 15 fully grown elephants.
Why the nickname “The Bean”?
Although Kapoor officially named the sculpture Cloud Gate, Chicago locals gave it the nickname “The Bean” during construction, after seeing design renderings that resembled a giant kidney bean. The moniker quickly caught on and has remained ever since.

Raccoons: Clever Survivors of the Wild and Urban World

Raccoons: Clever Survivors of the Wild and Urban World

The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is classified among the carnivores, a mammalian group traditionally made up of animals that primarily consume meat. However, many members of this group are also capable of eating berries, fruits, vegetables, eggs, acorns, beech and hickory nuts, grains, grasses, and bark when other food sources are scarce. Carnivorous mammals have five toes and prominent canine teeth. Raccoons are omnivores, and the proportion of plant and animal foods they consume changes according to the season and what is available in their surroundings.

Essential Horse Care: A Comprehensive Guide for Responsible Ownership

Essential Horse Care: A Comprehensive Guide for Responsible Ownership

Owning a horse is a deeply fulfilling journey that blends companionship, adventure, and stewardship—yet it demands unwavering commitment, time, and resources. Horses have been cherished by humans for millennia, serving as partners in work, sport, and leisure, and today they thrive as pleasure riding companions, competition athletes, or beloved pets. However, this bond comes with significant responsibilities: horse ownership is a long-term commitment (often spanning 25–30 years, the average lifespan of a horse), requires daily care and attention, and entails substantial financial investment in feed, healthcare, and facilities. Legally, owners are obligated to meet their horse’s basic welfare needs, including adequate nutrition, water, shelter, exercise, social interaction, and prompt medical care. Additionally, in regions like Victoria, Australia, owners keeping horses on their property or agisting (boarding) horses must obtain a Property Identification Code (PIC) to ensure traceability and compliance with animal welfare regulations. Embracing these responsibilities not only safeguards the horse’s health and happiness but also deepens the trust and connection between owner and equine companion.

Smart Casual for Men: The Definitive 2025 Style Guide

Smart Casual for Men: The Definitive 2025 Style Guide

Smart casual remains one of the most elusive dress codes in men’s fashion—neither overly formal nor purely casual, it balances polish and comfort in a way that adapts to countless contexts. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “neat, conventional, yet relatively informal in style,” but this vague description leaves plenty of room for interpretation. In 2025, the term has evolved beyond outdated rules, becoming a flexible framework that reflects personal style while respecting occasion norms. Unlike rigid dress codes of the past, modern smart casual is as much a mindset as a set of garments—prioritizing well-maintained pieces, intentional coordination, and a balance between refinement and relaxation. Whether you’re dressing for a work lunch, a weekend brunch, or a casual client meeting, mastering smart casual means understanding how to blend elevated basics with casual staples, adjust for context, and infuse personality without sacrificing polish.

Eight Fascinating Realities Regarding Goats

Eight Fascinating Realities Regarding Goats

Goats are characterized by their intelligence, inquisitive nature, and spirited personalities. At Farm Sanctuary, our rescued residents are frequently celebrated for being the most enthusiastic individuals to greet guests during tours. Unfortunately, the industrial farming system treats these perceptive creatures as mere commodities, resulting in the worldwide slaughter of 1.4 million goats every single day. When we appreciate goats for the unique individuals they are, the idea of causing them pain becomes unthinkable.
