Known as “dorayaki,” this sweet treat is instantly recognizable to fans of the beloved cartoon series Doraemon—it’s the iconic cosmic cat’s all-time favorite! Without a doubt, this confection shines thanks to its distinctive form, delightful flavor, and wide array of taste combinations, cementing its status as a trendy snack adored both in Eastern and Western regions today. At Oriental Market, we’re excited to unveil our brand-new line of dorayaki flavors—once you take a bite, you’ll be eager to sample every last one!
Describing dorayaki couldn’t be simpler. It’s a sweet dessert crafted from two round kasutera cakes (a style created in 1915 by Ueno Usagiya) that typically encase fillings like anko (sweet red bean paste) and smooth chocolate. That said, this classic treat has undergone a delicious transformation in recent months, boasting numerous fresh, innovative flavors. Historically, dorayaki featured a single layer and was commonly paired with a cup of tea. But what other scrumptious fillings can you find in modern dorayaki creations?
  • Lemon & Cheesecake Dorayaki: A dream come true for cheesecake enthusiasts! This delightful creation marries the soft sweetness of the kasutera sponge with the bright, zesty tang of lemon—striking an impeccable balance that’s simply irresistible.
  • Chocolate Dorayaki: The ultimate pick for die-hard chocoholics! Sandwiched between two fluffy cakes is a rich, intense chocolate filling boasting a luxuriously creamy texture that melts in your mouth with every bite.
  • Green Tea Cream Dorayaki: A beloved Japanese classic infused with the iconic flavor of Asia’s most cherished herbal tea. The robust, earthy notes of high-quality matcha powder take center stage, offering an authentic taste of tradition. For an extra indulgent twist, we also offer the Green Tea & Mascarpone Dorayaki—combining matcha’s distinctiveness with mascarpone’s silky smoothness.
  • Strawberry Cream Dorayaki: Designed for strawberry lovers, this fruity delight delivers a texture reminiscent of luscious strawberry jam. Sweet, juicy, and bursting with fresh berry flavor, it’s a vibrant treat that’s hard to resist.
  • Last but certainly not least, the most timeless option in Oriental Market’s lineup: the Red Bean Dorayaki. Paying homage to its classic roots, we’ve elevated this staple with a creative twist—adding a layer of creamy cheesecake for a modern take on a beloved favorite.
A quick note: Each dorayaki weighs 75 grams and contains milk, wheat flour, and eggs. It may also include traces of soy, sesame seeds, peanuts, and mustard. If you’re not allergic to any of these ingredients, we highly recommend sampling every flavor—then let us know: which one stole your heart?
Fun Fact: A charming Japanese legend surrounds the origin of dorayaki. It’s said that a samurai named Benkei fled to a peasant’s home to hide, accidentally leaving behind his gong (called a “dora” in Japanese). Later, the peasant repurposed the gong as a pan to fry the batter, giving birth to the snack we now know as “dorayaki” (literally “gong cake”).

The White Tiger: Genetics, Myths, and Conservation—Unveiling Nature’s Rare Marvel

Few creatures command attention like the white tiger. With its snow-white fur, jet-black stripes, and piercing blue eyes, this big cat stands as one of nature’s most captivating spectacles, weaving a spell over anyone fortunate enough to see it. Found in select conservation parks worldwide—including Taman Safari Bali—white tigers have long been surrounded by myths, from being revered as divine beings in ancient cultures to being misunderstood as a distinct tiger species. Yet beyond their breathtaking appearance lies a fascinating story of genetics, adaptation, and conservation. Contrary to popular belief, white tigers are not a separate subspecies nor albino; they are a rare genetic variant of the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), shaped by a recessive gene that alters their pigmentation. Their existence highlights the complexity of natural genetics, while their presence in zoos and conservation centers plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about the broader threats facing all tiger populations. In this exploration, we delve into the science behind their unique coloration, their physical traits, the challenges they face in the wild, and their vital role in conservation education—separating fact from fiction to celebrate one of nature’s most extraordinary creations.
