Every boater can remember the first moment a lighthouse appeared on the distant horizon.
Before modern electronic navigation became standard on the water, these towers played a vital role in protecting sailors along the coast. They warned mariners about rocky shorelines, concealed shoals, and hazardous waterways, helping generations of vessels find safe routes into harbor. Over time, these structures also became enduring symbols of the coastal communities they served.
Many of Narragansett Bay's historic lighthouses are still active today. Although their navigational purpose has changed with modern technology, they remain defining features of Rhode Island's coastline and provide memorable destinations for boaters traveling through the waters of New England.
Beavertail Lighthouse
Located at the southern end of Jamestown, Beavertail Lighthouse is among Rhode Island's best-known landmarks and occupies one of the oldest lighthouse sites in North America.
The existing tower was constructed in 1856, although navigational signals had been maintained at this location since the eighteenth century. For boats entering Narragansett Bay from the Atlantic Ocean, Beavertail continues to be one of the first prominent landmarks visible along the coast.
The rugged shoreline around the lighthouse provides impressive views across the ocean while highlighting the importance that coastal navigation once held for mariners traveling this section of Rhode Island.
Castle Hill Lighthouse
Few lighthouse landmarks are as strongly connected with Newport as Castle Hill Lighthouse.
Positioned at the entrance to Newport Harbor, the lighthouse has guided arriving vessels since 1890. The small granite structure stands on a rocky point and has become one of Rhode Island's most frequently photographed coastal locations.
For boaters approaching Castle Hill, passing the lighthouse can feel like the official beginning of a Newport excursion.
Rose Island Lighthouse
Rose Island Lighthouse stands on a small island situated between Newport and Jamestown, occupying a particularly important position within Narragansett Bay.
Constructed in 1870, the lighthouse once helped direct ships toward Newport Harbor and provided essential navigation assistance to commercial and military vessels traveling through the area.
Today, the carefully restored structure remains a striking connection to Rhode Island's long maritime past.
Dutch Island Light
Dutch Island Light has stood in the West Passage and overlooked Narragansett Bay since the nineteenth century.
Compared with some of the bay's better-known lighthouses, this landmark sits in a more secluded setting. That quieter atmosphere makes it especially appealing to local boaters who want to venture away from the area's more heavily traveled routes.
The waters surrounding Dutch Island reveal another character of Narragansett Bay, characterized by broad open spaces, attractive coastal scenery, and a more relaxed rhythm.
Point Judith Lighthouse
Positioned at the entrance to Point Judith Harbor, this lighthouse has helped guide sailors along Rhode Island's southern coast for more than 200 years.
The present granite tower was built in 1816 and continues to serve as a major navigational landmark in the area. Located close to one of New England's busiest fishing harbors, Point Judith Light has historically provided a reference point for commercial ships, recreational boaters, and mariners traveling between Narragansett Bay and locations farther east.
For many cruising boaters, seeing Point Judith signals the start of a journey toward Block Island or the trip back home following a weekend spent cruising Rhode Island's waters.
Why Jamestown Is an Ideal Starting Point
Keeping a boat in Jamestown offers the advantage of placing many of Narragansett Bay's most recognizable landmarks within convenient cruising range.
Boaters can travel from Beavertail and Rose Island to Castle Hill and Dutch Island, spending an entire day discovering centuries of maritime history without traveling far from their home harbor.
Situated near the center of Narragansett Bay, Conanicut Marina offers convenient access to several of the area's most scenic cruising routes. Its location makes it a practical starting point for exploring the celebrated coastline and maritime landmarks of Rhode Island.
