Mountain lakes possess an untouched, pristine charm throughout the year, but their winter appearance has a special kind of magic. Once the water freezes and fresh snow covers the surrounding landscape, these alpine settings seem to transform into an entirely different world.
The snowy conditions can make reaching them a bit more difficult, but the added effort comes with one major advantage: far fewer visitors along the way. If you are willing to bundle up and embrace the cold, these five mountain lakes are particularly rewarding winter destinations.
1. Rawson Lake, Alberta, Canada
Rawson Lake rests beneath the dramatic cliffs of Mount Sarrail and offers spectacular scenery in every season. Reaching the lake involves a demanding uphill hike that passes through spruce forests and follows the shoreline of Upper Kananaskis Lake. Once winter arrives, the same route becomes one of Alberta's excellent destinations for snowshoeing, allowing visitors to experience the peaceful landscape beneath a blanket of snow.
2. Maroon Lake, Colorado
Located roughly ten miles west of Aspen in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado's Maroon Lake provides extraordinary alpine scenery. The lake creates beautiful opportunities for photography, particularly when its surface reflects the towering peaks rising to nearly 14,000 feet. The surrounding scenery takes on a different character throughout the year, from brilliant golden aspens in autumn to a spectacular snow-covered setting in winter. Maroon Creek Road is closed to vehicles during the colder months, but visitors can still reach the area by cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling.
3. Ellery Lake, California
Ellery Lake remains relatively obscure and does not have an established trail running around its shoreline, yet its appearance becomes especially impressive after a fresh snowfall. The lake is located in the Eastern Sierra near Tioga Pass and directly beneath Tioga Peak, close to Yosemite National Park. It stretches through Upper Lee Vining Canyon and offers two notably different perspectives. One viewpoint is closer to Yosemite at an elevation of 9,489 feet, while the far eastern end of the lake is also, somewhat unusually, situated at 9,489 feet.
4. Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Canada
Fed by glaciers, Moraine Lake is one of the Canadian Rockies' most spectacular natural treasures. Even in winter, its water retains a rich blue color, creating a striking contrast with the snow-covered mountains surrounding it. The combination of the deep blue lake, frozen winter landscape, and towering snow-capped peaks makes the scenery even more captivating during the colder months.
5. Snow Lake, Washington
Given its name, it is easy to imagine how beautiful Snow Lake becomes when winter snowfall covers this alpine destination near Snoqualmie Pass. The area is a popular winter snowshoeing destination and makes for a convenient day trip from Seattle. The route starts from the parking area at Alpental Ski Area, providing access to a peaceful mountain landscape transformed by snow and ice.

The White Tiger: Genetics, Myths, and Conservation—Unveiling Nature’s Rare Marvel
Few creatures command attention like the white tiger. With its snow-white fur, jet-black stripes, and piercing blue eyes, this big cat stands as one of nature’s most captivating spectacles, weaving a spell over anyone fortunate enough to see it. Found in select conservation parks worldwide—including Taman Safari Bali—white tigers have long been surrounded by myths, from being revered as divine beings in ancient cultures to being misunderstood as a distinct tiger species. Yet beyond their breathtaking appearance lies a fascinating story of genetics, adaptation, and conservation. Contrary to popular belief, white tigers are not a separate subspecies nor albino; they are a rare genetic variant of the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), shaped by a recessive gene that alters their pigmentation. Their existence highlights the complexity of natural genetics, while their presence in zoos and conservation centers plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about the broader threats facing all tiger populations. In this exploration, we delve into the science behind their unique coloration, their physical traits, the challenges they face in the wild, and their vital role in conservation education—separating fact from fiction to celebrate one of nature’s most extraordinary creations.

The Beauty of Crevice Gardens
Who hasn’t been amazed by a dandelion pushing through a small sidewalk crack or a tree surviving on a rocky cliff? These examples remind us that plants can adapt to environments that seem impossible for growth. Many species have evolved to live in harsh conditions, and the combination of delicate foliage and flowers against rugged stone creates a unique visual effect. Crevice gardening gives gardeners the opportunity to recreate these natural scenes while experimenting with an unusual and artistic style of planting.
